PELHAM, Ala….The Wildlife Center, Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center, has been named a "Best of the Road" Editors’ Pick 2006 by Rand McNally. The Rand McNally editors reviewed hundreds of scenic drives to come up with five trips that offer a variety of interesting roadside stops called "Best of the Road."
A non-profit organization located at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, The Wildlife Center appears with just 28 other sites in the new 2006 Rand McNally Road Atlas. These roadside stops include food, shops, and attractions along trips n Colorado, Alabama, Tennessee, Minnesota, California, Ohio, West Virginia, and Ontario, Canada. The Wildlife Center is one of the recommended stops to be named an Editors’ Pick.
Each year the Center cares for more than 2,500 injured and orphaned wild creatures, including almost 2,000 birds representing more than 100 species. Thousands more are aided across Alabama through the Center's Hotline, which provides advice and assistance on wildlife problems and emergencies.
The Wildlife Center offers reality-based educational opportunities featuring actual wildlife patients and their case histories. The facility is open to the public for self-guided tours, and features the Treetop Nature Trail. A beautiful 750-foot elevated walkway in the woods, the handicapped-accessible boardwalk offers close-up views of non-releasable hawks and owls in natural habitat enclosures built among and around the trees. The walkway connects with a .3-mile hiking trail to The Wildlife Center.
