EDUCATION BIRDS

Our Philosophy

The Wildlife Center’s educational mission is focused on the interface between the people and the wildlife of Alabama.  Educational programs are designed to create greater understanding that each of us is a member of an ecosystem, and that our daily activities have direct consequences for other members of our ecosystem, as well as for the air, land, and water that support us all.

The Alabama Wildlife Center’s educational tours have been greatly enhanced over the past year by the participation of our education birds, Natchez, a Mississippi Kite (left), and Coosa, a Barred Owl (right), who are continually training with the Education Team. The Team, led by Assistant Rehabilitation Director Sandra Allinson, consists of volunteers Sabrina Baker, Pam Cooper, Lynda Horton, Jessica Johnson, Kate Koppleman, Pat Malloy, and Marianne Robinson, who work together with Coosa and Natchez to provide interesting and informative guided tours for schools, scouts and civic groups. Visitors are fascinated by the calm and majestic bearing of these seldom-seen birds. By featuring live birds during educational tours, we are able to offer visitors an up-close experience with a live raptor as they learn about the important role that predatory birds play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Tours and programs are available by appointment only and must be made in advance
